Description

Death focuses the mind on the things that really matter: why are we here, and what should we do?

Darkness reigns. For color to be seen we need our eyes to be sensible to it. Shine a close bright source of light in front of your eyes, and you'll soon find yourself incapable of discerning dim distant lights. You'll swear it isn't there, but turn the bright lightsource off and wait a few minutes for your vision to adjust. Soon your eyes will show you that there's more to your surroundings than you could imagine. It's a wonderful sight our way of life denies us.

Most beautiful things in life lie right under our nose. We have an extreme capability of adapting to our surroundings. But does it sometimes go against us ? To most of us the bright light is believed to be most important. I find that averting my sight from the bright light to reveal the wonders of where I truely find myself.

My Beyond the City photography series will encompass a wide range of night photography, themed around concepts presented in Clarke's books. I find his books an inspiration, and I encourage you to read his masterpieces.

Winter Milky Way - exposure taken on 21st of March near Bucharest, Romania, overlooking a cropfield due west. Shot using a Canon 50D and Tamron SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II, mounted on a regular tripod. This is a 15 second exposure at F/3.5, ISO 2000.

This is 10-15 km out of town and I've been more or less surprised to find that light pollution is a serious problem. It's nowhere near as bad as inside the city, but it is precisely this intermediate condition that gives an overall look of light pollution effects, how much it spreads, and also of the prospect of shooting in as dark places as I can in the future.

Nice night photo, I like how much black there is in this shot, makes the stars stand out that much more.

The title reflects the photo very well, what is beyond the city, well that is quite clear looking at the image.

Technically I think you have done a lot of right here, shutter speed is perfect to avoid startrailing, there is just a tiny hint of it in the extreme corners.
Personaly I would not shoot this at iso 2000 with citylights in it, and I also notice you have applied a lot of noise reduction to this image which have created a bit of artifacts.
I think 50% of what is used in this image would be much better, a little bit of noise is a whole lot better than the artifacts too much noise reduction creates.

The focus is spot on though and the image is very sharp which is really nice, there are many cameras even on the low end that will autofocus on the city lights under such conditions.

For post processing I think less noise reduction would go a long way and perhaps add a gradient filter and lower the exposure at the bottom just a little, it would balance the image out more.

When it comes to composition the image is nicely balanced even with the citylights at around 1/8th of the image, I do not think I would change much if anything in that regards, perhaps get down even lower but keep the same framing.

Overall I think you have done a good job on this one, my advice for simular shots in the future is to look at the image at 100% when you apply both sharpening and noise reduction.

Nice work.
